Our History
In November 1912, a group of Alaska Native graduates of a Presbyterian high school met to worship God on the traditional land of the Tlingit people, located in Southeast Alaska on the island of Kupreanof. This began a season of prayer and discussion around organizing a Presbyterian mission church in Kake.
Our 100-year celebration in November 2012 brought together member churches of the Presbytery of Alaska. Our preparation and time of celebration allowed us to reflect on our congregation's beginning, reminded us of our journey of faith and our mission, and turned our thoughts toward our future as a body of Christ in our island community.
During the spring presbytery meeting in Haines, Alaska, in 2013, Kake Memorial Presbyterian Church was graciously dismissed from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and joined the newly formed denomination, ECO (Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians).
What We Believe
The Bible is God's
Inspired Word
We believe the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments, is God’s inspired Word and our highest authority for what we believe and how we live.
The Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit is God, working in us to guide, strengthen, and transform us. The Spirit helps us live holy and loving lives, gives us spiritual gifts, and empowers the Church to serve God and others.
The Trinity
We believe in one God in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God created all things, knows and rules over all things, never changes, and is greater than our understanding.
Saved By Grace
We believe we are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by our own good works. Through the Holy Spirit, we are born again as children of God and continue to grow in faith, love, and holiness.
Fully God
& Fully Human
We believe Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human, God’s only Son and our Savior. He lived without sin, died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead, ascended to heaven, and will come again to judge the world. Through faith in Him, we receive forgiveness and eternal life.
Jesus Is The Head
Of The Church
We believe the Church is the body of Christ, with Jesus as its head. The Church is called to follow God’s Word, share the Gospel, serve others, and help people know and follow Christ. We believe Jesus established Baptism and the Lord’s Supper as signs of God’s grace.
